OTTAWA (NEWS1130) - Talks have broken off in dramatic fashion between Air Canada and its flight attendants which is setting the stage for unionized staff to walk off the job as of 12:01 p.m. EST Wednesday.
Even if they walk off the job, the federal government will order them back to work, but that's not providing much peace of mind for travellers heading out of Vancouver International this morning.
Some people say having to force employees to work is not exactly an ideal situation. "I think you'll notice a difference in people's demeanours, which doesn't really push you out per say, but it, does in the morning when you're saying 'hello' to someone and they just look at you. You want people back to work because they want to be there," says one man.
Another woman said she rescheduled her flight to fly out this morning instead of tomorrow after the airline phoned to say that she should.
Federal Labour Minister Lisa Raitt expects the two sides to get back together today and come up with an agreement. CUPE says talks ended abruptly last night when an Air Canada spokesperson used an expletive to describe the efforts of the federal mediator and union representative.
If the strike goes through, Air Canada says it will operate a partial schedule and is waiving re-booking fees |
