VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - A fundraising campaign is underway to buy a new mammography screening machine for one of Vancouver's last remaining community hospitals.
Patients at [url=http://www.providencehealthcare.org/info_msj_main.html]Mount St. Joseph Hospital are predominantly Chinese-Canadian and there's concern a lot of those patients won't get tested if a new machine isn't installed.
Ann Corrigan with the Tapestry Foundation for Health Care says the old analog machine has failed, so a new digital one will make all the difference for patients.
"This community includes generations of Chinese-Canadians that have been coming to Mount St. Joseph's for years. Without the ability to do the appropriate screening, they might not feel comfortable going to another facility, or it won't be convenient for them, so they won't get screened."
Dr. Richard Lee is a radiologist at Mount St. Joseph's. "We often see two or three generations of Chinese families going to MSJ because of this high level of care and the comfort level it brings. They may be dealing with language issues so an unfamiliar facility may be inhibitive."
Around 7,500 screenings are done each year at the hospital.
Corrigan says a new digital unit could double that number.
So far, $40,000 has been raised, but $650,000 is needed for a new machine.
