Fairmont hotels brewing special events for Nov. 12
Tea drinkers, mark next Saturday on your calendars. Fairmont, the international hotel and resort company headquartered in Toronto, has declared Nov. 12 "Tea Day."
"Fairmont has a long, illustrious history of serving the best afternoon tea in town," says a release from Fairmont. "To celebrate - Fairmont has declared Saturday, Nov. 12 as a day to pay tribute to all things tea."
Called "Get Steeped with Fairmont," events will range from tours of a tea estate in Kenya to sipping frozen tea in half coconuts in Mexico.
Here are some highlights, starting close to home.
- In Ottawa: The Château Laurier will feature a special "Get Steeped Afternoon Tea Saturday ($39 per person; reservations recommended).
Served from noon to 5 p.m., it will feature strawberries marinated in ice wine, special pastries and elegant open-faced sandwiches with such toppings as cucumber with local Clarmell Farms goat cheese, roast Alberta beef with shaved fresh horseradish and Atlantic smoked salmon with citrus marmalade and grainy Dijon mustard.
While all those creations are special for the day, the scones with Devonshire cream and house-made jam will be the usual ones served at the hotel.
"We're passionate about our scones," says Justin Giroux, the chef for Zoé's Lounge, where afternoon tea is served.
"You really can't improve on them."
Choices of tea will include Jasmine Butterfly Green Tea, Fairmont Earl Grey and Egyptian Chamomile.
Zoé's will be serving more bracing tea libations as well. Three special cocktails have been developed for the day: the Peppermint Tea Mojito, $14, which includes mint tea, rum and sugar; a Brewed Berry Cocktail, $12, with raspberries, vodka and Fairmont's Berry Berry tea; and Blueberry Tea, $13, a delightful drink to warm a grey November day, with hot orange pekoe tea, amaretto, Grand Marnier and a cinnamon stick.
These tea cocktails are on the menu Nov. 12 only, until 1 a.m.
- In Quebec City: At the Château Frontenac, Hot Maple Tea will be served with Sortilege liquor.
- In Toronto: The Royal York plans to make it a royal affair with Prince William's groom's cake, teas from the Commonwealth and Victoria Gin MarTEAnis.
- In Victoria, B.C.: The Empress, famous for its afternoon teas, will have a tea sommelier on hand to conduct tastings.
- In Vancouver: The Fairmont Waterfront will offer a flight of three warm, spiked teas, paired with pastries.
In Bermuda: - The Fairmont Hamilton Princess will hold a special Afternoon Tea Waltz.
- In the Mayan Riviera: Fairmont Mayakoba will celebrate the day with a Berry Berry and Xtabentun (a local liqueur made from anise seed, honey and rum) Mayan tea, with hot and iced versions.
- In Kenya: The historic Norfolk will invite guests to tour a neighbouring tea estate, where they will be taken through techniques involved in growing and harvesting tea.
- In China: Fairmont Beijing will offer cocktails using local Chinese teas to create the Chamomile Kiss and Jasmine Pearl.
