Thousands protest tuition hike plans in Quebec
March peaceful; Pepper spray used at McGill occupation

Quebec students proved they are serious about fighting tuition fee increases as thousands of them skipped classes and marched through the streets of downtown Montreal on Thursday to demonstrate their opposition.
With police riot squad lining the streets, students marched from Berri St. to Premier Jean Charest's office on McGill College Ave., waving placards, shouting, blowing horns and chanting along the circuitous route - but with little violence underscoring their message.

While universities tried to say classes were continuing despite the boycott, Université du Québec à Montréal spokesperson André Valiquette said most students were on strike and most classes were cancelled.
At McGill, Olivier Marcil, vice-principal of external relations, defended the tuition fee hike, saying: "We believe these increases are reasonable, overdue and necessary for ensuring the quality of higher education in Quebec."

But the Charest government has already adopted a tuition fee increase in its budget that calls for a hike of $325 a year for five years, which would bring tuition fees to $3,793 in 2017 from $2,168 now.
