Promotion without a raise

I am facing a promotion without a raise.

I currently work as an IT Network & System Administrator for a non profit agency.

Since the last 1.5yr, my responsibility has increased greatly, that I have to do what I consider beyond the scoop of an IT Admin, but what you would expect for a IT Network Engineer + Manager.

So, I brought this up to my supervisor (Non IT), so that they can review my job, and the needs of the agency along with the possible adjustment with my pay in the future.

Today, I was presented with the following:

1> No pay raise is available at this time, and they think my pay is stil within reason.
2> My job title will change to IT Manager, yet being a manger I would be consider as exempt staff, exempt staff do not get pay for overtime when work over 40hrs.

I want to hear your opinions ... .

If you refuse to have the promotion, will they fire you?

so only change for promotion is better title but no OT pay? If this is the case I would prefer to stay with what you are now, unless you enjoy to have so-called "manager" title, Or look for another company which gives better offer.

stay put and keep banking on OT

Are there any prospects of salary adjustment after you move up to managerial grade? Or, do you intend to jump ship and go work at a different company at a managerial level? If your answer is yes on either of these questions, you should definitely take up the managerial title. Even if you haven't thought about those, you could think about those possible routes now and see if that career path is what you want to pursue.

Since you are at a non-profit agency, your prospects of getting a higher salary is pretty low. If you have career ambitions, you'd really have to go elsewhere. In the US, especially, there is really no need for regular employees to feel any loyalty to the companies they work for. They are buying your talents to perform their business operations. It's a business exchange that doesn't really need any emotional attachments. Things might be a little different in a non-profit organization, and you'd have to consider how much you value the altruistic contributions your job gives you. But hey, if you end up getting a higher paid job, you could easily contribute those extra $$ back to whatever good causes you prefer.

On the other hand, if you are comfortable at where you are, and the lifestyle that your current job affords you, then sticking with the same title while collecting OT pay is the way to go.

我會咁睇,長遠嚟講如果你想做management role嘅話,咁就take 呢個title,做一排就搵過第二份。如果你暫時無心轉工,咁就維持原狀攞OT pay算啦。

Take the title.  Keep in mind in these days, keeping a job is difficult let alone a raise.  With a better title, you can jump to a better $ job in the future.

Thanks for your feedbacks.  There is no doubt I am attached to the agency emotionally.  I will think it over tonight, and I am suppose to meet with my supervisor to talk about this in details tomorrow.

stay and get OT.  IT manager without staff doesn't mean much.  Job title is just a name.  What matter the most is whether you have real management experience.  If not, then who cares about the title.

I would go for promotion without a raise because the title is so important in today job market, just get the title and experiences for now and move up in others company
