VANCOUVER -- Downtown Eastside residents who say the rat population in the neighborhood has become unbearable will host a rat count tonight.
One area in particular, a garbage and debris filled lot, is home to “hordes of rats up to 9 inches long,” state the residents in a release. Consequently, they want the city to force the owner to clean up the site according to the Standards of Maintenance Bylaw.
The bylaw mandates “every owner of land must keep the land, and any building or accessory building on it, in such condition that it will not afford harbourage for or become infested with pests.”
The count will begin at 9:30 p.m. tonight, on the steps of Carnegie Centre, 401 Main St. Residents will talk about how they have been affected by the rats and then go to the site to count.
