Four men are in hospital with injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening after a shooting at a Richmond banquet hall just after 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Three were rushed to Vancouver General Hospital and another to Richmond Hospital after the incident at the Riverside Banquet Hall located in an industrial part of the city at 14500 River Road, according B.C. Ambulance Service spokesman Ben Mittelsteadt.
Chaos broke out when a single shooter opened fire in what RCMP Insp. Bryon Massie said was a targeted shooting, but not believed to be related to the recent gangland violence that has rocked the Lower Mainland.
The hall was hosting a union gathering of about 120 people for longshoremen that had just joined the union, according to one of the managers of the hall who refused to identify himself.
“Everything’s fine, they’ve taken everybody away, the banquet’s finished and the staff has all gone home,” he said at 10:20 p.m. from the hall. “We don’t know what happened.”
His staff were shocked but uninjured, he said.
Massie, regional duty officer for the Lower Mainland, said the investigation is in its early stages and police don’t yet have a suspect description or know the motive for the shooting. Massie would not comment on reports that a man was taken into custody east of the banquet hall shortly after the shooting.
Massie held a brief news conference in front of police cruisers blocking River Road just after 11 p.m. Wednesday.
He said RCMP have been told the party was a birthday celebration.
“A special occasion liquor licence had been issued for the gathering,” he said.
“It is the belief of the investigators that this is a targeted event. There is no information … to suggest that this is related to any of the events that have occurred over the Lower Mainland of the last week.”
But he stressed that it is early in the investigation and that police had not yet spoken to all of the witnesses, who were transported to the Richmond detachment on a transit bus.
Nor have officers been able to talk to the victims yet, said Massie,
Massie said there is no information about whether the shooting was gang-related.
It is the same banquet hall where gangster Kuljit (Kelly) Buttar was gunned down at a wedding there on Dec. 22, 2001. Four others were wounded in the spray of bullets at the hall.
Several dozen off-duty Richmond RCMP officers and one off-duty paramedic were having their annual Christmas party just above where that shooting took place.
"We were in another part of the building when shots rang out below," RCMP spokesman Sgt. Peter Thiessen – then a constable – told The Sun in 2001.
Officers, many wearing evening wear, rushed downstairs and provided first aid to those shot, Thiessen said.
"We saw lots of blood and lots of hysterical people," he said. "We went from a Christmas-party mode to active police work in a split second. ... Our members reacted quickly. We were responsible for saving lives. ... We were concerned for our safety. We weren't sure if these people were going to come back." |
