More than 47,000 Lower Mainland homes without hydro as winds whip B.C.'s South Coast (updated)
Most outages recorded in Surrey and Langley
Nearly 10,000 Lower Mainland BC Hydro customers went without power late Thursday night as heavy winds whipped through the region.
The causes of the outages, which hit Abbotsford, Langley, Surrey, White Rock, and North and West Vancouver, were all under investigation as crews worked to restore power.
B.C. Hydro estimated power in the affected areas would be restored by 12:30 a.m. Friday.
Late Thursday night the Lions Gate Bridge was temporarily shut down in both directions after a tree fell on the Stanley Park causeway.
Environment Canada forecast south to southeast winds of up to 80 km/h for the region, and warned damage to buildings could occur.
