Want to ask a friend of mine (who is also a Canadian citizen declared non resident) to get a pair of diamond earrings (around HK$ 20,000) in Hong Kong. She went back to HK for goods for a few years and she will be coming here next year to visit her family. So, she can bring the earrings over to me by that time. Does anyone know what is the duty rate for bringing jewlery / diamond here? Has to be legal, cuz I don't want her to get into trouble. Anyone try this before?
Would like to know what is the total cost before I can ask her to get it. If after the duty / gov. tax and end up to be the same price as getting it here, then I will just buy here.
For jewlery ... ~ 24% tax .. (my friend told me, who is in Jewlery business)
I am not sure if that 24% include GST/PST or not .. or just duty ..
If 24% include GST/PST/Duty .. then it is not bad .. but if just duty .. let me ask him later sin ..
The duty you pay depends on the country of origin of the goods, and on top of that you pay tax (13% for BC). A lot of times people end up paying only PST and GST when bringing goods into Canada.

i would just smuggle it over... i did that with all my wedding jewellery including diamond ring, wedding band, gold jewellery...
i remember i either wore it, or mix it up with my cheap jewellery other things, hide rings in my coin purse.... just wrap & smuggle.
as for the receipt, i just hid it somewhere too...or mail it back, or leave it for my other relatives to bring to me next time.
