The first Canadian Starbucks location to close its doors due to current economic conditions will be at Aberdeen Centre in Richmond tomorrow.
The store is one of 365 Starbucks in B.C. and the coffee retailer is saying its closure is due to underperformance.
Starbucks Corp. is reportedly planning on closing 800 stores in the U.S. and 100 stores elsewhere, although it is not known how many will be shut down in B.C. or across Canada.
Nicolas Migraine, who frequents the Aberdeen Starbucks, said Tuesday morning that he was shocked at the news it was closing.
“I had no idea. I come here all the time,” he said.
Inside the store, there was no indication that Wednesday would be its last day open.
Migraine said he often grabs his morning coffee at the store, as his mother lives close by, but added he will have no problem finding someplace else to go for his caffeine fix.
“There's places other than Starbucks to get coffee,” he said.
The store is part of Aberdeen Centre, the $100 million mall that opened its doors in December 2003 facing scrutiny as just a handful of its 250 retail spaces were ready for business. The Starbucks didn't open its doors until September 2004.
Employees at the store said they couldn't comment on the closure.
