From a purely biological point of view, the animal instinct only instruct us to do 2 things:
1) eat
2) reproduce
To ensure the maximum number of surviving offspring, the male and female both want to introduce as much genetic variation as possible -- having genetic variation among their offspring is cheap insurance for survival against different possible conditions. The male has this easy -- all he needs to do is to spread his DNA and fertilize different eggs in different females. Thus for the male, monogamy is against nature's programming.
For the female, things are a little different and more complicated because rearing and raising a child endangers the very survival of the female herself. During pregnancy, the female cannot fend for herself (for food, for protection, etc.). After delivery, if the female spends her time looking after the child, she cannot find food to keep herself alive. If she goes find food herself, no one will take care of the child and the child will get eaten by wild beasts. Without a male that is capable of providing the female with the means of survival, the female and her child simply cannot survive.
Now, for a powerful alpha who is capable of continually delivering the means of survival, the survival instinct of the child-rearing female will simply cause her to ignore / tolerate all the other females (and their children) that engage "her" alpha male. They will only interfere if the existence of the other female-child unit endangers her own female-child unit's chances of survival (eg. the male not being able to deliver the means of survival to both parties, for example.) If they do not follow this rule, the male can easily ditch the female and the child to look for someone else, and then the female would be stuck with the dilemma I mentioned earlier.
Now, once the child is old enough to look after himself, the female is now against influenced by her animal instinct to maximize genetic variation in her offspring. As such, she begins to look for a new and different male to reproduce with her, and once again look after her and her child. And then the cycle repeats.
And thus the animal instinct to eat and reproduce works completely against monogamy.
Again, the above explanation is only a completely objective analysis based on biological reasoning, and therefore does not represent my person subjective opinion on the matter.
