Hello everyone, i just came back from New York City, and I was disappointed with what I see.

NYC was 1 of the top 10 most expensive cities in the world.  The average cost is $400/night in hotel.   With this kind of price, I have a high expectation of what I should see in the city.

The subway was very dirty.  For some stations, I saw mouse running in the track.  Beggars slept on the benches at the waiting area, and it's not easy to find some area with the smell of pee.

The city was very noisy: voice, car, horn, subway, TV, construction....until at midnight, which is like HK.  

The roads were so badly maintainned. Many concrete roads are cracked, and sometimes they will fill a hole with red brick in the middle of a concrete roads.  It feels like cut and paste,,,,

Dirty!  The city is dirty and has bad smell after rain.  

Other than that, the rest of the city is quite alive and interesting.

So anyone has thought about NYC?

i actually really liked the subway.. it's very nostalgic of the old, but yea there are very few new trains in service there. as with mouse/rats.. NYC is famous for that...

HK is also considered very prosperous too. All great metropolitan cities shares these problems.

there are rich and poor in different areas of NY, NJ... the privilaged will live the high life.. other's will have to live low. but all in all the big apple have a lot going on all around...

what i enjoyed msot there is looking at the art culture and gallery hopping..

hm...i quite like it, i like it more than toronto.  1. shopping shopping shopping, the biggest shopping outlet in america wor = dept stores  2. museum & gallery; so many different types, you can't even think of.  3. long island - the old movie "fairytale in autumn".  4.  food, from most expensive to cheapest.  5.  broadway shows.  yes part of the city is dirty & smell, but expected.

I went 3 years ago alone and love the NYC that I saw... well expect.. as I told many already... driving there at night without a map and with a non-functional GPS (cos of the tall buildings)

what i did:
1) half a day in the Metropolitan Museum (I could easily spent a day there), had lunch in that area and also did some window shopping. walked into 2 churches in the area as well.
2) Greenwich area, stroll into washington square and watch some street jazz and tricks show, stroll into little italy (they have some kinda festival there with lots of booths) then china town. Took metro to see battery park overseeing statue of liberty, wall st
3) shopping at H&M, walked around time sq area, watch a Broadway show (the Producers)

That's really is the best part. I want to go back cos i didn't have enough time to do what I wanted to do:
1) Empire State building for the night view
2) Central park
3) food (I went alone so I didn't eat at really expensive places)

I love shopping at NYC, it reminds me of Hong Kong.

mucc1928 you should go to cities like Zurich in Switzerland......coz most metropolitan are dirty and noise (maybe except Tokyo.....)

Sorry for the late reply.

Littleprince, dont' get discouragement because of me.  I have high expectation on NYC b'cos American always critized about how dirty chinese is, how bad chiense is and so on...

Well, all i can say is DOUble Standard.

Since I am a guy, I am not too interested in shopping.  And as for the shopping part I can do it online anyways, so I put most of my focus on arts and tourists attraction.  Well, the art district, which is Chelsea, has 3 streets of Galleries.  However, claiming as a city rich with art, I expect there would be sculptures, photographs, metal arts, theatres and so on....well, mostly drawing only.

In NYC I like greenwich the most because people look more friendly and educated.  And that district has a sense of European style.  The main is, the road looks clean and better maintained.

Big city could be dirty due to the amount of people littering, but the iold and badly maintained nfrastructures are  biggest disappointment in my whole trip.  Other than that, i do have a good time making friends and checking things out.  The city has a lot of energy at night, if you don't mind the chance of being jumped.
