How many weeks do you need to give your employer anyways? Some people say 1 month, some people say 2 weeks is enough. Anybody know if there's a real law about resignation?
Another question, once you send in the written resignation letter, can the employer fire you on the spot? I mean, if my boss decide to make an excuse to let me go after I gave him the letter, what can I do? Can the employer force you to take all the outstanding vacation hours that you've collected so they don't have to pay for the vacation time they owe you? Can I say no to take those vacation on demand and make them give me cash instead?

If he fires you without a reason (obviously handling a resigning letter is not a reason) you and sue him. And if he's laiding you off that point, he still has to pay you reimbursement. But if you give him 2 weeks notice and he asks you to leave right away and give you 2 week pay, that's a different story.
Usually there's no "resign law" thingy for workers, but giving 2 weeks is good so that your old company can get some new hires, finish your paper work (e.g. RRSP you paid, insurance stuff) and give you an exit interview (for future reference and employment)

It all depends on your contract. A lot of companies will pay your oustanding holiday in a lum sum. Some people choose to take the holiday right before leaving the company. Contact HR department if you don't have your contract!
